Want to know more?

Find out about how ncn can help you develop your everyday skills in the School of Functional Skills.

ncn has a range of courses to help you improve your English and maths skills for work and everyday life. With the support of ncn, your confidence will grow with your skills, and our tutors and advisers can also help you develop new goals and achievements.

There are three types of everyday skills courses at ncn:

  • Basic Skills

Basic Skills Courses are for adults who do not have grade C or above in English or maths. You can improve your English skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) and your maths skills (numbers, handling data and measurement) in Basic Skills courses, and also study another course, such as history, media, floristry or office administration.

  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

ESOL Courses are for adults whose first language is not English. You can improve your reading, writing, and speaking and listening skills in an ESOL course, as well as study pronounciation, spelling, grammar and vocational subjects.

  • Progression Courses

Progression Courses are for adult learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

With the skills you learn, you can:

  • Get a qualification, including the National Test in Literacy and Numeracy at Levels 1 and 2.
  • Move on to higher level courses, such as GCSEs.
  • Move on to a better job.
  • Move on to training for employment, such as NVQs.

Many of these courses are free. For more information on everyday skills courses, and how ncn can help you, please contact one of our advisers on 0115 9 100 100.
